How much mobile data do you really need abroad?
1GB? 10GB? Unlimited? A simple breakdown of real-world data usage so you don't overpay, or run out mid-trip.
Buying too little data means buying again mid-trip; buying too much means wasting money. Here's a realistic guide based on how people actually use their phones while traveling.
Light use: maps, chat, the occasional search
If you mostly use Google Maps, WhatsApp and quick searches, around 500MB to 1GB per day is plenty. A daily-quota plan shines here because your allowance resets every morning.
Moderate use: social media and photos
Add Instagram, TikTok and uploading photos, and you'll want roughly 1 to 2GB per day. A fixed 10 to 20GB pool also works well for a one or two week trip.
Heavy use: video calls, streaming, hotspot
Streaming video, long calls or tethering a laptop can burn 3GB+ per day. Go for a higher daily quota or an unlimited-style plan, and use hotspot sparingly to make it last.
